May 3, 2009 I have been sent my airline ticket to LA and it seems like it all will start very soon. Have been following other blogs re. Fiji and if correct, there should be about 30-35 of us neeting in LA.
Spending my remaining days saying goodbye to friends and phasing out of various organizations, particularly the League of Women Voters, whom I shall miss. Was asked to give a talk to the local Kiwanis club about joining the PC and spent most of the time explaing why a person of my age would do such a thing as packup, leave family and go to "some god forsaken place" As the reader can surmise, I was unable to get any of these old timers to volunteer for the PC. Looking forward to meeting my fellow PCers and starting the big adventure.

march 6, 2009

In the last few months I have read number of blogs regarding tne excitement and frustration of the long wait to have the Peace Corps make a decision of whether they want you and determing where you will be sent. I have gone thru this same frustration, but now that I know where I will be going, I can understand why it took so long. I have come to the conclusion that the Peace Corps is fussy for very good reason--after all we will represent the USA abroad.

This being said, the chore now is to decide what to take and what to leave at home. Based on my past experience traveling in SE Asia and India, it is much more .logical to travel light and buy what you need at your destination. I was in an e-mail conversation with a woman already on site and she said travel light and pick-up what you need as you go along..

I shall be at the staging event May 19th and am anxious to meet my fellow volunteers--my only apprehension being older than the usual volunteer is whether I can keep up with all these young kids. I have been health
certified and hope this means I can work in the area of health education at the grass routes rather than doing what I spent my career doing, ie, working with university students in Public Health. This may sound strange but I would like to put in practice all those theories I made students learn for so many years.
